DRIVE CYCLE GUIDE

How Toyota and Lexus readiness differs by monitor, why EVAP often takes longer, and when the exact confirmation driving pattern is necessary.

Important: Drive cycles vary by model year, engine, transmission, fuel type, software calibration, and the monitor that is incomplete. Use this as practical guidance—not a substitute for the exact service procedure. Obey traffic laws and never watch a scan tool while driving.

TOYOTA USES MONITOR-SPECIFIC PATTERNS

Toyota and Lexus do not use one universal drive cycle for every vehicle. Service information often provides a separate confirmation pattern for catalyst, oxygen-sensor, EVAP, EGR/VVT, and other monitors. The exact engine and calibration matter.

Before trying a pattern

  • Do not clear codes again.
  • Confirm there are no active or pending faults related to the incomplete monitor.
  • Use roughly ¼ to ¾ of a tank when working on EVAP readiness.
  • Begin with a true cold soak when the service procedure calls for it.
  • Use a scan tool to identify the exact monitor that remains incomplete.

Catalyst and oxygen-sensor monitors

These commonly need full operating temperature, stable closed-loop fuel control, moderate acceleration, and a steady cruise in the 40–60 mph range. Smooth throttle matters; hard acceleration can move the vehicle outside the monitor’s enabling window.

EVAP monitor

EVAP can be the slowest Toyota monitor because it may need a narrow fuel level, acceptable ambient temperature, an overnight cold soak, normal driving, and a long key-off period. Filling the tank completely can stop some EVAP tests from running.

EGR/VVT and other monitors

These may require particular engine speed, load, coolant temperature, and deceleration conditions. Several normal mixed-driving trips may be more effective than repeatedly forcing one generic route.

Toyota’s owner-manual guidance

Toyota manuals explain that readiness codes erased by a discharged or disconnected battery are set again during ordinary driving, but driving habits can keep some monitors incomplete. If the exact monitor does not complete, use Toyota service information for the vehicle’s confirmation driving pattern.

Toyota monitor-specific patterns

THE SHAPE OF THE DRIVE MATTERS.

These original Smog Dawg diagrams preserve the speed, time, temperature, idle, and soak relationships shown in Toyota’s monitor-specific confirmation patterns. They are a visual reference—not a promise that every Toyota or Lexus uses the same pattern.

Before using a pattern: match the model year, engine, fuel type, calibration, and the exact monitor that is Not Ready in Toyota service information. Follow traffic laws and never watch a scan tool while driving.

Toyota Drive Pattern 1

EGR monitor

Legacy confirmation pattern for Toyota engines other than the 1FZ-FE.

43–56 mphIdleWarm up 10 minCruise 3–5 minIdle 3–5 minCruise 3–5 minIdle 3–5 minKey off
How to read this chart:
  1. Warm the engine at idle for 10 minutes.
  2. Drive steadily between 43 and 56 mph for 3–5 minutes.
  3. Return to idle for 3–5 minutes.
  4. Repeat the cruise and idle phases once more.

Use note: Applies only where Toyota service information identifies this EGR pattern; verify the exact engine and model year.

Toyota Drive Pattern 2

EGR monitor — 1FZ-FE engine

Cruise and idle phases are repeated for the engine-specific EGR check.

43–56 mphIdleCruise 3–5 minIdle 3–5 minCruise 3–5 minIdle 3–5 minKey off
How to read this chart:
  1. For a 1FZ-FE engine, accelerate smoothly into the 43–56 mph range.
  2. Hold that range for 3–5 minutes, then idle for 3–5 minutes.
  3. Repeat the cruise and idle phases a second time.

Use note: This is the 1FZ-FE-specific legacy pattern, not a universal Toyota EGR procedure.

Toyota Drive Pattern 3

Catalyst monitor — O2S type

Warm fully, complete the temperature-dependent cruise, then hold the lower cruise range.

40–50 mph35–45 mphIdlePRECONDITIONSWarm: ECT ≥176°F7 min if IAT <50°F · 3 min if >50°FCruise 7 minKey off
How to read this chart:
  1. Warm the coolant to at least 176°F.
  2. Hold 40–50 mph for 7 minutes when intake air is below 50°F, or 3 minutes when it is above 50°F.
  3. Reduce speed smoothly and hold 35–45 mph for 7 minutes.

Use note: O2S-type catalyst pattern. Intake-air temperature changes the first cruise duration.

Toyota Drive Pattern 4

Catalyst monitor — A/F sensor type

After warm-up and a steady cruise, vary speed smoothly within the lower band.

40–50 mph35–45 mphIdlePRECONDITIONSWarm: ECT ≥176°F7 min if IAT <50°F · 3 min if >50°FVary 35–45 mph for 16 minKey off
How to read this chart:
  1. Warm the coolant to at least 176°F.
  2. Hold 40–50 mph for the temperature-based period shown.
  3. For the next 16 minutes, vary speed gently between 35 and 45 mph instead of locking onto one exact speed.

Use note: A/F-sensor catalyst pattern. Vary speed gradually and safely; do not force the cycle in traffic.

Toyota Drive Pattern 5

EVAP monitor — internal pressure / non-intrusive

Cold-soak preparation is followed by a 45 mph phase and repeated lower-speed phases.

45 mph25 mphIdleCOLD-SOAK PHASEDRIVE PHASEWarm to ECT ≥176°FCold soak45 mph · 5 min25 mph / idle · 15 minKey off
How to read this chart:
  1. Complete the warm-up and cold-soak conditions shown for the applicable vehicle.
  2. Drive at about 45 mph for 5 minutes.
  3. Over the next 15 minutes, alternate the lower-speed 25 mph phases with idle periods.
  4. Keep the fuel level in the vehicle’s required EVAP range—commonly about ¼ to ¾ tank.

Use note: Fuel level, ambient temperature, key-off time, and a sealed fuel system can all determine whether EVAP runs.

Toyota Drive Pattern 6

EVAP monitor — vacuum pressure / intrusive

Soak and warm-up are followed by a brief 3,000 rpm event and an extended idle.

3,000 rpmIdleSOAK / CONDITIONSWarm up3,000 rpm · 10 secIdle 15–50 minKey off
How to read this chart:
  1. Begin only after the required soak and warm-up conditions are satisfied.
  2. Raise engine speed to approximately 3,000 rpm for 10 seconds.
  3. Return to idle and allow 15–50 minutes for the monitor or a diagnostic result to complete.

Safety: Do this only where prolonged idling is permitted and the vehicle can be ventilated safely.

Use note: The test can complete when the readiness monitor sets or a DTC is recorded. Never hold engine speed if unsafe or prohibited.

Toyota Drive Pattern 7

EVAP monitor — without leak detection

Warm the engine, then repeat the 43–56 mph cruise and idle sequence.

43–56 mphIdlePRECONDITIONSWarm: ECT ≥181°FCruise 3–5 minIdle 3–5 minCruise 3–5 minIdle 3–5 minKey off
How to read this chart:
  1. Warm the coolant to at least 181°F.
  2. Hold 43–56 mph for 3–5 minutes, then idle for 3–5 minutes.
  3. Repeat the same cruise and idle sequence once more.

Use note: Verify that this older non-leak-detection pattern matches the vehicle before attempting it.

Toyota Drive Pattern 8

EVAP monitor — Prius

After the required soak, hold the specified highway range for the full period.

50–65 mphIdleSOAK / CONDITIONSSoak50–65 mph · 15 minKey off
How to read this chart:
  1. Start after the required Prius soak conditions are met.
  2. Accelerate smoothly into the 50–65 mph range.
  3. Remain in that range for approximately 15 minutes when traffic and posted limits allow.

Use note: Prius applicability varies by generation and calibration. Confirm the exact Toyota service procedure first.

Toyota Drive Pattern 9

Oxygen sensor monitor — front and rear O2S

Timed 25 mph and idle phases are repeated in the sequence specified by Toyota.

25 mph / >900 rpmIdleONCETWICE3 TIMESUP TO 10Idle >2 min25 mph >50 secIdle >40 sec25 mph >50 secIdle 40 sec25 mph 50 secKey off
How to read this chart:
  1. Idle for more than 2 minutes.
  2. Drive at about 25 mph and above 900 rpm for more than 50 seconds.
  3. Return to idle for more than 40 seconds.
  4. Repeat the timed drive-and-idle portions in the count required by the exact Toyota procedure.

Use note: Repeat counts in Toyota service information matter. Identify the exact incomplete O2S monitor before using the sequence.

Toyota Drive Pattern 10

Oxygen / air-fuel-ratio sensor monitor

A warm highway phase is followed by timed 25 mph and idle repetitions.

40–70 mph / 900–3,200 rpm25 mph / >900 rpmIdleONCETWICEUP TO 10Idle >2 min40–70 mph >3 minIdle >10 sec25 mph >40 secIdle >10 sec25 mph >40 secKey off
How to read this chart:
  1. Idle for more than 2 minutes.
  2. Drive between 40 and 70 mph, while remaining within the shown rpm range, for more than 3 minutes.
  3. Idle for more than 10 seconds.
  4. Alternate 25 mph phases lasting more than 40 seconds with idle periods longer than 10 seconds, using the repeat count in the service procedure.

Use note: This front A/F-sensor and rear O2S pattern is engine- and calibration-specific.

Toyota Drive Pattern 11

Oxygen / A/F sensor heater monitor

Hold idle for nine minutes, then drive above 25 mph for two minutes.

>25 mphIdleIdle 9 minAbove 25 mph · 2 minKey off
How to read this chart:
  1. Start the engine and let it idle continuously for 9 minutes.
  2. Then drive above 25 mph for 2 minutes.
  3. Recheck readiness only after stopping safely; never watch the scan tool while driving.

Use note: A simple-looking pattern can still require specific starting conditions; use the correct model-year service information.
