Vehicle Safety Systems Inspections
SAFETY.
SYSTEM BY SYSTEM.
The Smog Dawg is a Vehicle Safety Systems Inspection station for vehicles that need California’s comprehensive safety certification.
A VSSI checks the systems that help keep the vehicle—and everyone around it—safe. The inspection includes:
- Body structure
- Brakes and lights
- Passenger compartment
- Steering and suspension
- Tires and wheels
- OBD scan, recalls, and road test
One electronic certificate
When an applicable vehicle passes, BAR issues an electronic certificate of compliance. For affected registration transactions, this replaces the former separate brake and light certificates.
VSSI is commonly required for revived salvage or junk vehicles and certain other vehicle types. DMV determines the documents and inspections required for each registration transaction.
OBD-II readiness monitors
“NOT READY” CAN MEAN
NOT READY TO TEST.
Readiness monitors are the vehicle computer’s emissions self-tests. A Smog Check reads their status to see whether the applicable systems have completed testing.
What resets them?
Disconnecting or replacing the battery, clearing diagnostic codes, or completing certain emissions repairs can return monitors to “not ready.”
How do they complete?
Many complete through normal driving. Others need specific speed, temperature, engine-load, and drive-cycle conditions described by the manufacturer.
How do they affect Smog Check?
Too many incomplete monitors can prevent a vehicle from passing. California’s allowance depends on model year and fuel type, and certain vehicles have BAR-recognized exceptions.
Before your Smog Check
- Avoid disconnecting the battery or clearing codes immediately before the inspection.
- If repairs were recently completed, allow time for the applicable monitors to run.
- If the check-engine light stays on or a monitor will not complete, diagnosis or a manufacturer-specific drive cycle may be needed.
A check-engine light that remains illuminated while the engine is running will fail the OBD portion of a Smog Check. Readiness rules and vehicle-specific exceptions can change; contact the station for current guidance.
